K-Electric says no additional loadshedding after Bin Qasim unit goes offline

KARACHI: The first unit of K-Electric’s Bin Qasim 3 Power Plant (BQPS-III) is currently offline following an error identified during a test run as part of plant commissioning.

According to a statement from K-Electric, “The development occurred during testing of Siemens AG as part of the final phase of commissioning. Representatives from Siemens AG and Harbin Electric International, the contractor’s consortium, immediately made an assessment. World experts are tasked with the priority of solving this problem.

He said the preliminary assessment confirmed that the fault was isolated to the gas turbine part. “The restoration time is currently estimated at 8-10 weeks. A detailed root cause analysis is also underway,” the statement said.

It is worth mentioning that the unit has reached full load several times in the last month. Currently, the city’s electricity supply on a regular schedule is announced on June 30, 2022 and is available on the KE website.
