Senegal superstar Sadio Mane tops the list of 10 contenders for the African Footballer of the Year award, the award will be presented later this month, for the first time in three years, by the Confederation of African Football. (CIF) announced.
Mane, who last won the award in 2019, will be favored to win again after a season in which he helped Senegal win their first African championship title as well as a place in the World Cup. in Qatar.
He also won the cup with Liverpool at club level but has since joined Bayern Munich.
His former teammates Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah are also among the 10 nominees, along with Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez. Salah won this award in 2017 and 2018 and Mahrez in 2016.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the decision to move the calendar year qualifiers to the 2021-22 season are the reasons for no awards for the past three years, CAF officials said.
The winner will be selected by a jury consisting of members of the CAF’s technical committee, the press and the coaches and captains of the 54 African national teams and will be announced at a gala dinner in Rabat, Morocco on July 21.
